Founded in 1988, we the Franciscan Sisters, T.O.R. (Third Order Regular) of Penance of the Sorrowful Mother, follow the contemplative-active way of life of our founder, St. Francis of Assisi. Our Mission in the world is to make known God's merciful love as consecrated contemplatives comitted to prayer, penance, and works of mercy. Our mission is made tangible by our ministry among the poor, the sick and those in need of the good news of the Gospel through various works of evangelization. We seek to witness to the infinite love of God the Father and to Christ's spousal love for His Bride, the Church, as we stand with Mary, our Mother, at the foot of the Cross to intercede for the needs of the world. Our life is centered on the Gift of the Eucharist, Holy Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Liturgy of the Hours, the prayer of the Rosary, and devotion to Divine Mercy.

Nouwen wrote an entire book on this painting by Rembrandt. The book is titled The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming and in it he writes: "For most of my life I have struggled to find God, to know God, to love God...Now I wonder whether I have sufficiently realized that during all this time God has been trying to find me, to know me, and to love me...God is looking into the distance for me, trying to find me, and longing to bring me home."
